The Tourist

Year : 2010
Runtime : 103 Min.
Genre : Thriller, Romance
Director : Florian Henckel von Donnersmarck
Movie Stars : Johnny Depp, Angelina Jolie, Paul Bettany, Timothy Dalton, Steven Berkoff, Rufus Sewell, Christian De Sica
Country: USA
Language : English, Italian, French, Russian

Not as bad as pretty much all the critics say it is. It's entertainment! Not art! I don't think I can stress that enough. The director may have intended for this to be "the" romance thriller of the year and a wonderful film. The film was wonderful (I say that loosely) but it wasn't the best of the year. Vienna and Paris was a nice setting for the movie. It's pretty and interesting.Anyone will love it, especially if you have never been for yourself.

I sensed some chemistry between Johnny and Angelina... it wasn't much. Angelina played the role of the upper class well mannered woman well. Johnny played a very convincing dumb American tourist (speaking Spanish to the Italians... WTH). The match wasn't made in heaven but it was close enough for me. Ultimately this movie was a nice way to burn an hour and thirty minutes. It was entertaining, laughable,  and quite enjoyable for those you know how to sit back, relax and shut the fuck up about  all the things wrong with it.It was not the best, but most definitely not the worst.

The Victim (Phii Khon Pen)

Year : 2006
Runtime : 108 Min.
Genre : Horror, Mystery, Thriller
Director :Monthon Arayangkoon
Movie Stars : Pitchanart Sakakorn, Apasiri Nitibhon
Country: Thailand
Language : Thai

This should could have been two movies. The first part in it's own could have been a mystery where Ting is an aspiring actress who is haunted by the ghost of a beauty queen wanting to free her wrongly accused husband and get justice. I think that's been done before...anyways. The second movie should have been about a very famous and beautiful actress who is acting in a film about a ghost possession while fighting her own ghostly possessions. Instead the director took a different route and mashed these two films together.

Thinking back on it I believe this was a good idea because it's not the same-old-same-old ideas filled with a same amount of Thai culture and reinvented for a different market/generation. I know a movie within a movie is not a new idea but the director's take of a movie within a movie is what makes the film a hit. The Victim is not my favorite Asian or Thai horror film, but I did enjoy watching. The first half of the film is my favorite. During the second half everything drags on till the last 20 minutes when everything picks up speed again. I did not fully understand the ending at first watch, but after the second watch I understood.  I explained the ending at the bottom of this post if you are still confused after watching.

A wonderful Korean thriller to add to you collection. The film's plot revolves around the true story of a 10 year old kidnapped in 1991.  I don't want to spoil the movie but, obviously, he was not found alive.  The film never shows the child after he is kidnapped so we can conclude he was killed shortly after. Additionally, what kidnapper/ killer will feed and take care of a boy for 44 days?  Most children kidnapped are dead within 48 hours.  This is what makes this story so terribly sad is that the killer just played a game with them with no hope of the parents winning their son back. He got 200 thousand dollars, and in the 90s that was a lot more money than it is today. Why couldn't he just let the boy go and take the money to some nice island and live like a king. He won't have deserved it.

The killer was never found and as of 2007 the statue of limitations have expired. The killer put this family though hell and back and is still walking among us... maybe, hopefully some other bastard played a game with him  if you know what I mean.

I'm taking a break from the Tollywood movies and heading back to Korea, The King of movies. You know you love Korean movies too... or you just never seen one.  This was pretty good. I didn't love it but it's a good horror and suspense movie about a meek insurance agent that bits off more than he can handle when he begins having suspensions about the alleged suicide of a young boy .  The ending is quite a twist.

Good Neighbours

Year : 2010
Runtime : 98 Min.
Genre : Comedy, Crime, Thriller
Director : Jacob Tierney
Movie Stars : Jay Baruchel, Emily Hampshire, Scott Speedman, Xavier Dolan
Country: Canada
Language : English, French

I expected something totally different than this. I expected a movie where they didn't tell you who the killer was but the audiences is left to guess and put clues together themselves till the end of the movie when everything is revealed. Yea, not what happened. I read the plot on IMDB and thought that attendants of an apartment building would be trying to solve a murder mystery. Good Neighbours tells who the killer is in the the first 30 minutes of the film and then adds a sub murder plot for the remaining minutes of the film. Maybe you guys reading this review loved the movie, but I didn't get what I wanted and it wasn't even that funny. The funniest thing about this film was Jay Barunchel's hairy face and Emily Hampshire's insane love of cats. I also thought that Good Neighbours would be similar to Kiss Kiss Bang Bang because they are both murders and comedy. Kiss Kiss Bang Bang = A+, Good Neighbours = C. I would not recommend this movie to most people.

IMDB:Takes place in 1995, the year of the second referendum on the separation of Quebec. In the dead of winter, a serial killer is on the loose in the small Montreal neighborhood of Notre Dame de Grace. The tenants of an old apartment house must figure out who they can trust and who they can't. Reading this is more interesting than watching the film. I was still able to find some decent caps to share with you guys.

Mini Review: Nichols Cage Needs A Hair Cut and Marriage Problems

The Sorcerer's Apprentice (2010): Cute movie filled with funny moments. Nichols Cage's face when he was told that he wore old man shoes was to die for. Jay Baruchel (looks like a shyer and nerdier version of Nathan from Misfits) trying to stop the mops with an axe. LOL.
Rating: 3.5/5

Season of the Witch (2011) It wasn't that bad. Honestly the way the critics slammed this film and tossed it away like it was something dirty was just too much. The script could have been better but it was nothing close to being as bad as the crapper Red Riding Hood. I felt like the actors did the best they could with what they were given. OMG it's Nathan from Misfits!
Rating: 3/5

Couples Retreat (2009) Umm... not that funny but it had its moments. OMG it's Hritik Roshan (Not really its just Carlos Ponce)

Mini Review Of In-Theaters Now: Sucker Punch, Madea's Big Happy Family, The Lincoln Lawyer, Insidious, The Green Hornet

I decided to combine all these reviews into to one being as I don't really have too much to say about these films and I watched them awhile ago in theaters but I never did a post on them. Anyway, here they are nice and wrapped in a pretty little red and yellow tie.

Sucker Punch (2011): When I first sat down and the movie started playing I was like okay, this is going to get good. I mean nice Sweet Dreams music playing, etc... and then Baby Doll (the main character) is out of a mental hospital and into a whore house. WTF.I looked down at the family with the two small kids and I thought about how much they wished they would have read the full plot summary before taking their four and five year olds to this movie. Once the shock of being lied to by the film trailers (I know movie trailers don't ever lie... wink wink)  was over I sat and watched the film with a open mind. The action was decent and so was the acting and story line. Let me just say there is a little surprise at the ending. P.S. This is more of a guy's film with female favor tossed into it.
Rating: 4/5

Madea's Big Happy Family (2011): Funny as hell! A lot of people say that they did not like the movie but I personally believe that those people just do not know how to laugh. The plot is the basic Tyler Perry plot of girl being raped, redemption, etc.. etc.. but I just watch for Madea and trust me she was bigger and better than ever in this film. If you do not like Christian drama or Tyler Perry films just go for Madea. " Big girls you are beautiful"
Rating: 3.5/5

The Lincoln Lawyer (2011): Good plot with twists. I love the slower sarcastic vintage feeling that you get from watching the movie. I've never really been a big Matthew McConaughey fan but his acting was superb.
4.5/5

Insidious (2010): Not very scary and over done plot (not including the ending). If you watch A Haunting on Discovery channel than who have basically seen 1/3 of this film. Terrible acting on Rose Byrne's part. She was such a little cry baby and she bitched and all these other nonsenses. Before everyone attacks me with "OMG I loved Rose..." let me explain. There is a part in the middle of the film where the family is being attacked by the demons. They are everywhere and everyone is fighting them off. Now in the corner you see this little "word I don't wanna use" crying and screaming help at the top of her lugs while a demon is nearly on top of her. The husband is fighting demons off himself! How the hell can he help you Rose when he can barely help himself! Grow a backbone and start helping yourself! If you have read any of my other post you may know that I love a strong woman who can kick some ass so to me she sent us back into the stone age with this like act. Okay, Okay, maybe she was frozen in fear but come on she wasn't so frozen that she could just stand there and yell for help now was she.
Rating: 2.5/5

The Green Hornet (2011): Funny and overall good performances by Seth Rogen and Jay Chou.

Karthik Calling Karthik

Year : 2010
Runtime : 125 Min.
Genre : Psychological Thriller
Director : Vijay Lalwani
Movie Stars : Farhan Akhtar, Deepika Padukone, Ram Kapoor,S hefali Shah, Vipin Sharma
Country: India
Language : Hindi, English

Very different in terms of Hindi films. The beginning was perfect for me being as I love when the nerds become big man on campus but in the middle the film started to drag out..... realllllllllyyyyyy really baddddddd...... The middle should have been edited a lot better. Once over that milestone the ending was a nice tie-up. I don't want to give too much away but just remember it's a psychological thriller. Wink Wink :)

Darn phone won't stop calling me
Karthik (Farhan Akhtar) is an introvert want who lacks confidence in dealing with everyday life situations and feels trapped in his average job at a construction company. He produces even less-than-average results as he is continuously troubled by an incident of his childhood. His elder brother, Kumar, used to torture him, but whenever he complained to his parents about him, they did not believe him. One day, Kumar took Karthik to show him some beautiful tourist spot, and took him to a well, trying to throw him in it, but Karthik escaped. Kumar next tried to tie him with rope but accidentally fell inside the well and died. Karthik thought himself to be responsible for his brother's death.

Shonali Mukherjee (Deepika Padukone) is a co-worker at Karthik's company. Karthik’s boss Kamath (Ram Kapoor) and landlord treat him extremely negatively, often humiliating and disrespecting him. Shonali, on the other hand, is considered by Karthik to be an independent, classy and confident woman who remains unaware of his secret love for her, much less his existence even though he's worked at the company for close to 4 years. Karthik attempts to e-mail her his feelings very regularly, but on each occasion stops himself, as he concludes that Shonali is dating his co-worker Ashish. After being derided by his boss yet again, he figures that his life can’t get any better and decides to commit suicide by consuming sleeping pills. At the exact moment that he is about to consume the sleeping pills, the phone rings and a stranger, having the same voice as him, tells him that he is also Karthik, and that he is his well-wisher. By and by, Karthik finds that this stranger can exactly locate his psyche, and come up with solutions that can make things better. The caller convinces him that he has the ability to change him, if he strictly follows his guidelines. The caller expressly tells Karthik that he should not mention his phone conversations to anyone, lest he will be perceived as mentally ill.

Japaneses phones are evil

Gradually these phone conversations become his life guide. His chats take place every morning at 5:00 a.m. and the caller provides advice on every problem that arises in Karthik's life. The caller keeps a close eye on his life, guides him to become a successful man and win his secret love, Shonali and eventually enables him to bring color to his otherwise monotonous and unremarkable existence One day, when Karthik and Shonali are together, Shonali tells him that he should tell her everything. He tells Shonali about the mysterious caller, but Shonali does not believe him and asks him to consult a doctor. The night when he receives the call, the caller asks him to lie to Shonali and tells him not to consult a doctor. The next day he lies to Shonali, but she sees through his lie. When he goes to his psychiatrist, she asks her if she could come to his house and check the call at 5 a.m. When she arrives at Karthik's house, the phone rings and the same voice tells her that it existed whether she believed it or not and when she heard it, the cup from which she was drinking coffee, falls down. Karthik gets up and goes to get a wipe to clean it, and when he comes back in the room, he sees that there is nobody and the door is open. The next day he tells Shonali that he consulted a doctor. Shonali does not believe him and says that she will herself stay with him and see the calls arriving. The phone again rings in front of her also but she stops Karthik from receiving them. The phone eventually stops ringing.

Karthik receives the calls again the next morning, and the caller warns him that if he could bring him up, then he could throw him down also. When he goes to the office, his boss throws him out of the office telling that he called him last night and blackmailed him that he would tell his wife about his affair if he sold illegal land. While he is moving out, he meets Shonali who tells him that he called her last night and made fun of her. He tries to tell her that he did not do anything but she does not listen. Karthik thinks that he should go somewhere that even he would not know. He puts on his glasses and sits in the train, pretending to be blind. He thinks that he himself won't know where he is, then how would the caller know? He goes down the train on the station and asks the driver of his cab to take him to any small hotel of the area. When he reaches there, he asks the receptionist to remove the telephone and room number plate. After the passing of a few months, Karthik is comfortably living in a small town. His life is back to normal with respect to work and other elements except for the fact that he refuses to have a phone line. However, upon his boss's request, he is forced to purchase a landline but goes to great lengths to ensure that he himself is unaware of the number but purchases the same model that he had earlier. After a day of restless sleep, he is glad that no calls come through and takes this as a sign that those events will not occur again. But the next day, at exactly 5 a.m. he receives a call from Karthik, who tells him that he has found him and will now find a way to kill him. In the meantime, he has contacted Shonali and even intends to meet up with her one day. She is contacted by Dr. Kapadia who explains that Karthik is Schizophrenic.
Can you feel the love tonight?
He has an alter ego that is more assertive and advises him on what to do and how to live life. And he has been dealing with this condition from a young age when he created a fake brother. Turns out that the Phone Model that he purchased has the capacity to record messages and act as a playback feature at a certain time. And these functions work regardless of whether a phone is plugged in and the messages can also be sent to other numbers. This explains the voice on the other line. He would wake up in the middle of the night, leave himself messages in the alter ego state and then go to sleep.
Oh No, not even in India can you escape Hollister!
Eventually, Karthik is so disturbed that he attempts to commit suicide by ingesting sleeping pills, but Shonali arrives at the right time to save him. After a few months, Karthik is in the process of dealing with his schizophrenia and has Shonali's help in living a happy and rehabilitated life. Note: The last image of the rubiks cube signifies that Karthik's alter ego had won because the real Karthik could never have solved it.

Year : 1996
Runtime : 118 Min.
Genre : Horror, Thriller, Mystery
Director : Alejandro Amenábar
Movie Stars : Fele Martínez,Eduardo Noriega,Ana Torrent
Country: Spain
Language : Spanish

Wiki: Ángela (Torrent) is a film student at the Madrid's University Complutense. Searching for research material for her thesis (hence the film's title) on audio-visual violence, she attains the friendship of Chema (Martínez), a fellow student and introvert with an encyclopedic collection of violent and pornographic films.
After her professor dies while watching a film she steals the videotape, discovering that it is a snuff film featuring a girl whom Chema recognizes as a former student at the university - and a former associate of current student Bosco (Noriega). Investigating the origins of the tape, they are drawn into the operations of a chilling snuff ring.

I did not known whether I wanted to watch this movie or not because of the year it was made. I usually do not like to watch films made around the year I was born. I don't know why maybe it is because of the differences in hair and clothing styles that puts me off. Anyway, I decided to give this movie a chance because of the trailers. I loved it! It kind of reminded me of a Lifetime mystery movie but ten times better.  I loved the plot. It definitely kept me guessing as to who the killer(s) were. I would love to use a time machine and transport myself to 95 Spain to see what the Spanish thought of this film because I don't believe there were many like it back then.

A few points: The film was made with a low budget and was shot in 5 weeks! WOW. Many films with high budgets and long filming times are not as good as this. Eduardo Noriega (played Bosco Herranz) also stars in The Devil's Backbone. I knew I saw that face somewhere! Fele Martínez (played Chema) looks just like Johnny Depp in this film. I barely recognized him from his later film Bad Education.

Blue is the victim of illegal animal smuggling, but luckily an incident occurs that allows him to escape and find a good home with homely and bookwormish Linda in Minnesota. Years later, the two head off to Rio to bred Blue with his endangered species.  Problems arise when Blue and the fiercely independent Jewel becomes yet again a victim of animal smuggling. Thus begins an adventure of a life time for Blue.

I kicked off my movie watching weekend with Rio the new animated comedy. It was pretty funny (as funny as PG can be). Linda: " Is she a performer?"... Túlio: "No, She's my dentist!". I just thought that line was freaking hilarious because it adds to the stereotype that all Brazilian women are just beautiful. The beauty Brazilian scenery was to die for. If there is one thing this film gets an A+ on is the scenery and information. Carnival! If you enjoyed Madagascar the movie than you should check this film out.

Mother (Madeo)

Genre : Crime, Thriller, Mystery
Director : Bong Joon-ho
Movie Stars :  Kim Hye-ja, Won Bin
Country: South Korea

Another great film for the super hit director Bong Joon-Ho. It explores the intense relationship between a single mother and her son as she attempts to solve a murder and prove her son innocence. The film did not blow my mind or anything but it was any interesting watch and I would recommend this to anyone.

The film opens up to a woman, the mother, dancing and waving her hands in the air in a care free manner. That made me say okay and wonder what I've gotten myself into this time, but the film quickly set in motion the murder. Yoon Do-joon's mother treats him as her baby and prize as she watches over her shy and somewhat mentally disabled son who hangs with Jin-Tae, a local 'bad seed'. Do- Joon is quiet and calm but reacts violently when called 'retard'. Wondering drunkenly in the dead of night he walks across Yoon Je-Moon, a high school girl with a secret. He calls out to her aimlessly till she turns a corner and tosses a rock at him. Do-Joon wonders away to his house. Later he is arrested by the police after Moon's body is discovered on the top of a roof. I was utterly annoyed by the 80s style police methods that were used on Do-Joon. It was quite clear that Do-Joon is not the brightest crayon in the box. Any educated person could have guessed that he was mental disabled so his confession and lack of memory should have been disregardful. I'm not saying that he should have been treated like an angel but the everyday criminal was a bit harsh.

After being charged with the crime Do-Joon is sent to jail. The mother, who remains nameless, is sure that her son is innocent and sets out to find the real murderer and free her son. In various attempts to get her son to remember the events of that faithful night The Mother finds herself in a world that she simply can't handle and forced to the breaking point of their mother-son relationship.

Plot
A mother must free her son and discover the real murderer after her mental disabled son is sent to jail.

The story line was perfect and surprising. You will be kept on the edge of your seat and wondering what will happen next as you realize that what you think is reality is not. With that being said this is not your everyday slasher film or your Friday the 13ths and Scream. In a nutshell it's not mindless killing but has thought and dept. Though, it sticks to the usual supernatural Asian horror theme.

I originally thought the film would be more gory and violence but it's the total opposite. There is barely any blood or gore so all the faint-hearted are safe.

The whole concept of reincarnation in the film is that you are forced to repeat your previous life over and over again. After all, "Death is only the beginning." Nagisa Sugiura lands the role of a little girl murdered by her father in the hotel. Soon Nagisa realizes that the murdered girl is the one from her visions. As filming continues Nagisa progresses through the whole murder as her agent watches an old discovered film of the original murder filmed by the murderer himself. At every turn Nagisa sees the youngest victim and her eerie doll and eventually that victim's brother. Simultaneously a college student studying cryptomnesia and Yuka, a girl who had auditioned for Nagisa's role, discover that they are reincarnated victims as well and met their destined faiths.

Plot
A J-horror film about an Japanese actress having strange visions about a murder that took place over 40 years ago as she stars in the film depicting the murder and all eleven victims.

Year : 2007
Runtime : 159 Min.
Genre : Drama, Crime, Thriller
Director : Nikita Mikhalkov
Movie Stars : Sergey Makovetskiy, Sergey Garmash, Apti Magamaev
Country: Russia
Language : Russian, Chechen

I've wanted to see this movie since it came out in '07 but sadly I wasn't able to find it till now. The film is loose remake of the 1957 film Twelve Angry Men and revolves around twelve jurors trying to decide the faith of a Chechen boy accused of murdering his step father. All twelve men had decided the boy's faith and believe it will be an open and shut case of guilt.  If all jurors convict the boy he will serve a life sentence in prison. One of the jurors votes for an acquittal. Since the vote must be unanimous the jurors must remain in the school gymnasium and  review the case till they all come upon an agreement. The jurors are not given names during the whole film which makes it a little difficult to go into great detail about their character so please bare with me and I'll try not to confuse you. Each juror reveals personally information that leads to one or two jurors changing their vote while reviewing case evidence and become distinct characters. The boy's story is told in a serials of flashbacks while he awaits his faith.

Juror 1:  An extremely racists taxi driver (Sergey Garmash) who offend uses racists slurs about Jews and Chechens. He is the hardest juror to convince of the defendant's innocence because of his deep rooted hatred. He is the main antagonist of all the jurors. He attacks and intimidates the elderly Jewish man and TV producer.
Juror 2: The suspicious doctor.
Juror 3: An elderly Holocaust survivor who is the second to change their vote to not guilty after a thoughtful sit on the toilet. He says that the lawyer did not try to defend the boy and so they never got to hear any contradictory evidence that could exist.
Juror 4: A TV producer that is intimidated to the point of becoming sick by Juror 1.
Juror 5: A musician who is the only one to say not guilty in the first round of voting.
Juror 6: A cemetery manager that takes money from grieving families for the best burial spots. He uses the money to feed the homeless and build a school in his native town.
Juror 7: The head of the table and ex Russian officer. He keeps track of the changing votes and is the most important of the jurors.
Jurors 8-12: These jurors play a less important role in the film.

During the stay in the gym the jurors create experiments and theories to prove the boys innocence and one by one come to the conclusion that the boy was framed. The case has two witnesses: a elderly man with arthritis and a female that lives across the street. The elderly man states that he saw the boy fleeing the crime as he looked out his front door. The jurors come to the conclusion that the man could not have seen the boy fleeing because it would have taken him too long to reach the door from his sofa because of his arthritis in both legs. The defendant's living building consist of two apartments: the boy and his step father's and the elderly man's. The jurors know that a new building project is supposed to occur at that location but because the boy and his step father would not move it is put on hiatus. A recent change in the elderly man's address  leads them to figure out that the builders framed the boy to get their project going again. The remaining jurors that think the boy is guilty are now relaying on the female next door until the jurors came up with the explanation that she could not have seen the boy fleeing from across the street because it was night and she would not have been wearing her glasses. She lied because she was jealous of the step father and the boy's relationship.

The jurors vote not guilty and sigh in relief as they prepare to leave till Juror 7 says he votes guilty. In complete confusion the other jurors listen as he clarifies that he knew the evidence from the very beginning and of the boys innocence. His reason for voting guilty is he believes the boy will live longer in prison. The people who framed him will want to tie up their loose ends for good. The boy has no home, family, or money. The jurors argue till juror 7 says if everyone else votes not guilty he will too.  Juror 7 is forced to vote not guilty, but at the end of the film he tells the boy that he can live with him and promises to find his framers.

The film is an utter morality show to deal with racial tension and political problems faced in Russia. It has that To Kill A Mockingbird by Harper Lee feel to it. The director creates this morality show beautifully which makes this near three hour film in to an wonderful watch. The Chechnya flashbacks create a very Russian movie. I would recommended you have a little background knowledge of the Chechen and Russia turmoil. It makes the movie easier to understand. The Chechens are seen as evil terrorists and the Russians as the good force, a major part of juror 1's hatred and willingness to convict the destroyer of the "Russian hero".
