Mini Review Of In-Theaters Now: Sucker Punch, Madea's Big Happy Family, The Lincoln Lawyer, Insidious, The Green Hornet

I decided to combine all these reviews into to one being as I don't really have too much to say about these films and I watched them awhile ago in theaters but I never did a post on them. Anyway, here they are nice and wrapped in a pretty little red and yellow tie.

Sucker Punch (2011): When I first sat down and the movie started playing I was like okay, this is going to get good. I mean nice Sweet Dreams music playing, etc... and then Baby Doll (the main character) is out of a mental hospital and into a whore house. WTF.I looked down at the family with the two small kids and I thought about how much they wished they would have read the full plot summary before taking their four and five year olds to this movie. Once the shock of being lied to by the film trailers (I know movie trailers don't ever lie... wink wink)  was over I sat and watched the film with a open mind. The action was decent and so was the acting and story line. Let me just say there is a little surprise at the ending. P.S. This is more of a guy's film with female favor tossed into it.
Rating: 4/5

Madea's Big Happy Family (2011): Funny as hell! A lot of people say that they did not like the movie but I personally believe that those people just do not know how to laugh. The plot is the basic Tyler Perry plot of girl being raped, redemption, etc.. etc.. but I just watch for Madea and trust me she was bigger and better than ever in this film. If you do not like Christian drama or Tyler Perry films just go for Madea. " Big girls you are beautiful"
Rating: 3.5/5

The Lincoln Lawyer (2011): Good plot with twists. I love the slower sarcastic vintage feeling that you get from watching the movie. I've never really been a big Matthew McConaughey fan but his acting was superb.
4.5/5

Insidious (2010): Not very scary and over done plot (not including the ending). If you watch A Haunting on Discovery channel than who have basically seen 1/3 of this film. Terrible acting on Rose Byrne's part. She was such a little cry baby and she bitched and all these other nonsenses. Before everyone attacks me with "OMG I loved Rose..." let me explain. There is a part in the middle of the film where the family is being attacked by the demons. They are everywhere and everyone is fighting them off. Now in the corner you see this little "word I don't wanna use" crying and screaming help at the top of her lugs while a demon is nearly on top of her. The husband is fighting demons off himself! How the hell can he help you Rose when he can barely help himself! Grow a backbone and start helping yourself! If you have read any of my other post you may know that I love a strong woman who can kick some ass so to me she sent us back into the stone age with this like act. Okay, Okay, maybe she was frozen in fear but come on she wasn't so frozen that she could just stand there and yell for help now was she.
Rating: 2.5/5

The Green Hornet (2011): Funny and overall good performances by Seth Rogen and Jay Chou.

Year : 2011
Runtime : 148 Min.
Genre : Drama, Black Comedy

Country: India
Language : Hindi, English

Loved Priyanka in this movie! I definitely prefer her as the strong spirited female and heart broken woman in Kaminey (2009) instead of the fashion doll in Dostanna (2008) This  new theme of independent women remarrying is something not in seen in Indian cinemas. It makes me wonder how the Indian audiences responded to it. I just so happened to love it. The film is a bit lengthy and drags on in areas, but if you watched Bollywood films before this is not something new to you. One of my favorite aspects of the film is the fact that Susanna is always changing and becoming someone new, whether its from proper English wife- Rocker groupie- Faithful Muslim- Russian Anna- graying older women- wife of Jesus.  A major goof up of the film is the dates do not match. Hell, maybe its just my counting and POV but things just do not look right. Near the very end Arun finds a photograph label with the year 1949. Susanna looks to be about 7 years old. Now, if she was seven in the 50s she would have had to be about 20 in the 70s when she married her first husband when Arjun looked about ten to thirteen- maybe. If that is true than he would have to be  over 40 in present day (judging by his wife's phone and laptop it is present day). Arun does not appear a day over 30.

Wiki: The film tells the story of a beautiful Anglo-Indian woman Susanna Anna-Marie Johannes (Priyanka Chopra) who goes on to kill all her husbands.Susanna tries to find love but six of her seven husbands have a fatal flaw so she kills them. These killings and her yearning for love is explained by the fact that she had lost her mother at very young age. The story is narrated by a young forensic doctor Arun (Vivaan Shah) to his wife (Konkona Sen Sharma). Arun has observed Susanna since his childhood and has nurtured a secret crush on her. The boy owes his whole life to Susanna as she funded his education and made him what he is today. He starts off by declaring to his wife that Susanna has committed suicide leaving him a note congratulating him for his marriage. The doctor is now in charge of confirming whether the body found is Susanna's. Unable to overcome the grief of her death he lets out his feelings to his wife who listens to him patiently.

Now you know there are too many patterns... WTF
Susanna's first husband Edwin Rodriques (Neil Nitin Mukesh), an Army Major, whose fatal flaw is that he is overbearing, jealous and possessive. He is crippled and unable to digest the fact that a beautiful woman such as Susanna would actually be faithful to him and would be able to love him. There comes a point when he even starts to doubt his ability to father a child and takes out his anger on his wife. Though she bears the mental torture he subjects her to day after day, she could not forgive him for blinding her faithful, mute horse keeper (Shashi Malviya) in a whip fight. He is disposed of during a panther hunting trip with the help of her faithful maid (Usha Uthup), her butler (Harish Khanna) and the mute horse keeper.

Oh my dear John what have you done to your hair?
Blondie? Why is John wearing a skirt or a Scottish kilt?
Susanna's second husband, Jamshed Singh Rathod (John Abraham), who rechristens himself as Jimmy Stetson after their marriage, is a singer whose flaw is pride. The marriage starts off well but Jimmy starts gaining success and misusing his new found fame. He starts stealing songs and spending time with other women and becomes dependent on drugs. Susanna wants to be lucky in love the second time and tries her best to get him out of his addiction but in vain as he gets hooked on his addiction again secretly. At last she gives up on him and disposes of him through a Heroin overdose. The police find foot prints near his body which indicate that someone with six toes has committed the murder.

Trying something new I see...
Susanna's third husband Wasiullah Khan (a.k.a Musafir) (Irrfan Khan) is a soft and thoughtful poet by day, a sado-masochist by night. Susanna tries to cover the bruises he gives at night with make-up. Her faithful servants cannot bear to see her depressed and beaten up and advises her to get rid of him which she eventually agrees to. He is buried in a snowy grave in Kashmir.

Her fourth husband, Nicolai Vronsky (Aleksandr Dyachenko) is a Russian Spy leading a double life. When Susanna finds out that he has another wife who has borne him kids, her anger knows no bounds. He meets his end courtesy Susanna's pet snakes. Susanna transits into partial madness and no longer needs to ponder before disposing of anyone she disapproves.

Such beautiful faces...
Her fifth husband Keemat Lal (Annu Kapoor) is a police inspector, who has shielded his 'Madame' from prosecution in two murders and lures her into marriage. With a voracious appetite for sex, his need for Viagra proves to be his undoing as one fateful night, she makes him overdose on his Viagra by mixing it in his drink.

Dr. Modhusudhon Tarafdar (Naseeruddin Shah) a Bengali doctor saves her from a suicidal act she had due to loneliness and guilt after hearing of Arun's marriage and puts her on a mushroom only diet. While she does not wish to marry he convinces her into marriage saying that she will be the sole inheritor of his property. He tries to kill Susanna a few years after their marriage in order to inherit her money as he is actually bankrupt. He tries to poison her with mushroom soup, however the butler drinks it by accident and dies instead. In a state of shock, she shoots Modhuda during a session of Russian roulette.

The same night, Susanna lights her house on fire in an attempt to kill herself. Seeing the house on fire, her faithful maid with six toes comes to rescue her instead dies in the flame. In the forensic lab Arun finds out that the body is not Susanna's, yet he declares her dead in his reports. He goes in search of Susanna and finds her where she tells him she finally is getting married the next day to someone who accepts her, knowing all of her sins. Finally in spirituality, She imagines her seventh husband to be Jesus one who is full of love, and already 'dead' as she becomes a nun at the end. Susanna finally found the love she kept seeking all through her life and this person who is her ultimate real eternal husband, God who would never hurt her. Arun and his wife go back home, after he tells her that Susanna is dead forever.

Blue is the victim of illegal animal smuggling, but luckily an incident occurs that allows him to escape and find a good home with homely and bookwormish Linda in Minnesota. Years later, the two head off to Rio to bred Blue with his endangered species.  Problems arise when Blue and the fiercely independent Jewel becomes yet again a victim of animal smuggling. Thus begins an adventure of a life time for Blue.

I kicked off my movie watching weekend with Rio the new animated comedy. It was pretty funny (as funny as PG can be). Linda: " Is she a performer?"... Túlio: "No, She's my dentist!". I just thought that line was freaking hilarious because it adds to the stereotype that all Brazilian women are just beautiful. The beauty Brazilian scenery was to die for. If there is one thing this film gets an A+ on is the scenery and information. Carnival! If you enjoyed Madagascar the movie than you should check this film out.

IMDB: English rock star Aldous Snow relapses into drugs and booze after a break up and a disastrous record. In L.A., Aaron Green works for a record company stuck in recession. Aaron's boss gives him a career making task - to bring Aldous from London to L.A. for a concert in 72 hours. That day, Aaron's girlfriend Daphne tells him she wants to finish her medical residency in Seattle. Aaron's sure this ends their relationship. In London, things aren't much better: Aldous delays their departure several times, plies Aaron with vices, and alternates between bad behavior and trenchant observations.

This is a sequel to Forgetting Sarah Marshall, I'll have to give that movie I chance considering how much I loved  this film. This is another one of those Don't Judge A Book By It's Cover type thing of mine. Again, I saw the previews awhile back and thought I would hate it and it would be a waste of time. How wrong was I...? Russell is so bad ass I just love him as the carefree rocker type. I'm impatiently awaiting his newest film Arther. GHTTG was just full of funny moments and unrealistic ones, but if you are willing to look pass that this film is for you. (Who wants to see realistic things anyway...? then it would be real life not the cinemas)

Please pray and/or donate. Help those affected by the 2011 tsunami that has killed thousands of people and caused millions of dollars of damage to property and and the lives of those in the tsunami's path.

To kick off my movie marathon weekend I decided to watch this wonder of a film. I'm not too interested in romances or Japanese history but the movie poster drew me in. From what I understand the film is based on Japaneses manga novel "Basilisk". I've never heard of that series but I'll be sure to check it out due to this film.

I loved the actors, especially Joe Odagiri. That man has some sexy hair. He kinda reminds me of the Japanese Johnny Depp. I couldn't keep my eyes off him, which is a problem when you need to read subtitles. LOL. Erika Sawajiri (Hotarubi) is the perfect little picture of the stereotypical Japanese manga woman or high school girl: round face and big round eyes. She was cute, so her ability to control butterflies was extremely fitting and pleasing. As you read on you will find I have some nicknames for a few of the warriors. I had quite a laugh at Yashamaru. He reminded me so much of Ozzy Osbourne, The Prince of Darkness, or maybe Marilyn Manson.

Set in the Sengoku period of Japan, the movie kicks off with the introduction of our two main characters: Kouga Gennosuke (Joe Odagiri) the male lead and head of the Kouga Clan; Oboro (Yukie Nakama) the female lead and head of Iga Clan. From their first meeting the two are one and continue to secretly meet. Kouga and Oboro dream of being married and living in peace but are unable to because of their clan's vendetta that has been raging on for hundreds of years. The Iga live near the river and are one with water. They wear bright blues and purple colors. The Kouga are people of the earth who wear earth tones such as greens, reds, browns, and oranges. They live in the mountain's glassless areas. The people of the two clans possesse special abilities and powers.

Tokugawa Ieyasu, the shogun, fears the two clans and in an attempt to control them tells the leaders of each to choose their five best warriors to fight to the death. Ogen, the elder of Iga chooses Oboro who holds the power of "eye destruction"; Yakushiji Tenzen, a man that is nearly immortal due to parasitic worms that heal all injuries; Yashamaru, prince of darkness, controls long and extremely sharp wisp like wires; Mino Nenk, the animal, has an keen sense of smell and sharp craws; Hotarubi, the fair princess, manipulates butterflies. Kouga Danjo, the elder, of Kouga chooses Kouga, superman, can move and react at very fast speeds; Muroga Hyouma can sense enemies at any distance; Chikuma Koshirou has no superpowers but can react and control weapons with great actercies; Kagero, the seductives, can kiss and blow out poision as it flows though her veins; Kisaragi Saemon, the mound man, can become anybody by touching their face with his hand. Both elders die and pass on the burden of war to Oboro and Kouga.

Kouga believes there is an alternative motive to Tokugawa Ieyasu's ruling of clans. He and his group of warriors journey to see the shogun. Iga hears of Kouga and his warriors and decides to follow because she believes their faiths can not be changed. Yashamaru and Mino Nenk are killed by Chikuma Koshirou and Kagero. Muroga Hyouma is killed by Yakushiji Tenzen. Kisaragi Saemon takes the form of Yashamaru; he attacks the Iga fighters and is killed by Yakushiji Tenzen. During this ambush Hotarubi is killed by Chikuma Koshirou. After Killing Hotarubi, Chikuma Koshirou escapes on horse back and is killed by Oboro's eye destruction. Yakushiji Tenzen allows Kagero to kill him after he reveals that the end of their people is near and unavoidable. The two die together in an embrace.

After the deaths of the warriors Kouga and Oboro accept their faith. It saddens them both but Kouga allows Oboro to kill him. Oboro continues the journey to Tokugawa Ieyasu. Hidden behind a shield, Tokugawa Ieyasu listens to Oboro's pleads to save her village and stop the attack by his soldiers. Tokugawa Ieyasu will not agree to her pleads. Oboro raises her hand and jabs herself in the eyes, thus blinding herself to show her sincerity. Tokugawa Ieyasu calls off the attack and promises to protect the villages. The Iga and Kouga lived peacefully for a few hundred years.

The story line was perfect and surprising. You will be kept on the edge of your seat and wondering what will happen next as you realize that what you think is reality is not. With that being said this is not your everyday slasher film or your Friday the 13ths and Scream. In a nutshell it's not mindless killing but has thought and dept. Though, it sticks to the usual supernatural Asian horror theme.

I originally thought the film would be more gory and violence but it's the total opposite. There is barely any blood or gore so all the faint-hearted are safe.

The whole concept of reincarnation in the film is that you are forced to repeat your previous life over and over again. After all, "Death is only the beginning." Nagisa Sugiura lands the role of a little girl murdered by her father in the hotel. Soon Nagisa realizes that the murdered girl is the one from her visions. As filming continues Nagisa progresses through the whole murder as her agent watches an old discovered film of the original murder filmed by the murderer himself. At every turn Nagisa sees the youngest victim and her eerie doll and eventually that victim's brother. Simultaneously a college student studying cryptomnesia and Yuka, a girl who had auditioned for Nagisa's role, discover that they are reincarnated victims as well and met their destined faiths.

Plot
A J-horror film about an Japanese actress having strange visions about a murder that took place over 40 years ago as she stars in the film depicting the murder and all eleven victims.

Genre : Drama, Crime, Thriller
Director : Nikita Mikhalkov
Movie Stars : Sergey Makovetskiy, Sergey Garmash, Apti Magamaev
Country: Russia
Language : Russian, Chechen

I've wanted to see this movie since it came out in '07 but sadly I wasn't able to find it till now. The film is loose remake of the 1957 film Twelve Angry Men and revolves around twelve jurors trying to decide the faith of a Chechen boy accused of murdering his step father. All twelve men had decided the boy's faith and believe it will be an open and shut case of guilt.  If all jurors convict the boy he will serve a life sentence in prison. One of the jurors votes for an acquittal. Since the vote must be unanimous the jurors must remain in the school gymnasium and  review the case till they all come upon an agreement. The jurors are not given names during the whole film which makes it a little difficult to go into great detail about their character so please bare with me and I'll try not to confuse you. Each juror reveals personally information that leads to one or two jurors changing their vote while reviewing case evidence and become distinct characters. The boy's story is told in a serials of flashbacks while he awaits his faith.

Juror 1:  An extremely racists taxi driver (Sergey Garmash) who offend uses racists slurs about Jews and Chechens. He is the hardest juror to convince of the defendant's innocence because of his deep rooted hatred. He is the main antagonist of all the jurors. He attacks and intimidates the elderly Jewish man and TV producer.
Juror 2: The suspicious doctor.
Juror 3: An elderly Holocaust survivor who is the second to change their vote to not guilty after a thoughtful sit on the toilet. He says that the lawyer did not try to defend the boy and so they never got to hear any contradictory evidence that could exist.
Juror 4: A TV producer that is intimidated to the point of becoming sick by Juror 1.
Juror 5: A musician who is the only one to say not guilty in the first round of voting.
Juror 6: A cemetery manager that takes money from grieving families for the best burial spots. He uses the money to feed the homeless and build a school in his native town.
Juror 7: The head of the table and ex Russian officer. He keeps track of the changing votes and is the most important of the jurors.
Jurors 8-12: These jurors play a less important role in the film.

During the stay in the gym the jurors create experiments and theories to prove the boys innocence and one by one come to the conclusion that the boy was framed. The case has two witnesses: a elderly man with arthritis and a female that lives across the street. The elderly man states that he saw the boy fleeing the crime as he looked out his front door. The jurors come to the conclusion that the man could not have seen the boy fleeing because it would have taken him too long to reach the door from his sofa because of his arthritis in both legs. The defendant's living building consist of two apartments: the boy and his step father's and the elderly man's. The jurors know that a new building project is supposed to occur at that location but because the boy and his step father would not move it is put on hiatus. A recent change in the elderly man's address  leads them to figure out that the builders framed the boy to get their project going again. The remaining jurors that think the boy is guilty are now relaying on the female next door until the jurors came up with the explanation that she could not have seen the boy fleeing from across the street because it was night and she would not have been wearing her glasses. She lied because she was jealous of the step father and the boy's relationship.

The jurors vote not guilty and sigh in relief as they prepare to leave till Juror 7 says he votes guilty. In complete confusion the other jurors listen as he clarifies that he knew the evidence from the very beginning and of the boys innocence. His reason for voting guilty is he believes the boy will live longer in prison. The people who framed him will want to tie up their loose ends for good. The boy has no home, family, or money. The jurors argue till juror 7 says if everyone else votes not guilty he will too.  Juror 7 is forced to vote not guilty, but at the end of the film he tells the boy that he can live with him and promises to find his framers.

The film is an utter morality show to deal with racial tension and political problems faced in Russia. It has that To Kill A Mockingbird by Harper Lee feel to it. The director creates this morality show beautifully which makes this near three hour film in to an wonderful watch. The Chechnya flashbacks create a very Russian movie. I would recommended you have a little background knowledge of the Chechen and Russia turmoil. It makes the movie easier to understand. The Chechens are seen as evil terrorists and the Russians as the good force, a major part of juror 1's hatred and willingness to convict the destroyer of the "Russian hero".

This movie was really cool and neat. The directors took a extremely macabre and taboo subject such as suicide and turned it into a romance comedy. It's a shame that not a lot of people have seen this film.  The actors were really interesting and I give many praises to Patrick Fugit for his role as Zia.

Plot
If people commit suicide they end up in this world that's not heaven or hell, it's like a copy of our world but crappier. There are cites and towns built in a desert area, but no stars, decent food, and many other things that people on earth take for granted. Zia ends up in this world after his cuts his wrist and dies. The only thing he misses is his girlfriend Desiree.  Zia hears word that his girlfriend is in this limbo and sets out on an adventure with Eugene, a Russian rocker, and Mikal, a girl in search of the men in white that can return her to the real world. The journey takes many twist and turns through the world that is only slightly crappier than our own and leads to Zia discovering Desiree, the men in white, and his second chance to be in the real world.

Dogtooth

Dogtooth, or Kynodontas, is a extremely strange movie about a extremely strange family. I kinda liked the movie, through, I found myself angry over the parent's cruelness to their children and their utter lies.

The family lives on a compound on a island in Greece. The children are forced to stay into the compound at all times and will never be able to leave unless they get a dog tooth, the canine tooth found in humans, of course humans do not loss that tooth so the parents plan on keeping their children locked up forever. The children frequently listen to tapes made by their parents in order to educate them with new vocabulary- wrong vocabulary. For example, the mother tells the son that a zombie is a small yellow flower. This part especially annoyed me because if the children were to ever leave they would not be able to communicate with other Greek people. The parent's cruelness goes beyond this as they make the children preform usual task such as holding their breath the longest under water. The reward is stickers and being able to pick the family's nightly entertainment.

The father weekly picks up a woman by the name of Christina at her job in order to preform sexual favors for the son. The father blindfolds Christina each time on the way to the compound. Christina becomes unsatisfied with the sons performance and seeks out the oldest daughter. In order to get things in this family the children trade. Christina trades a headband for the eldest to lick her between her legs. The daughter has no clue of the nature of what shes doing because she had never been exposed to sex before. She does not know that this is not normal trading behavior.

The second time Christina seeks out sexual favors from the daughter she tries to trade hair gel, but the daughter refuses saying that the headband does not glow in the dark as Christina stated. Christina is forced to trade her two tapes: Jaws and Rocky.  The daughter watches these taps in the middle of the night. This is when she begins to wonder about the outside world. The father finds the taps and beats the daughter over the head with them. Angerly, he goes to Christina's house and beats her with the VCR player. Knowing that he can not trust the outside people he makes the son choice a sister for his sexual needs by making him close his eyes and feel their breast and ass to see which he preferred. He choices the eldest daughter.

The mother puts makeup on the daughter to prepare her for this sexual encounter. The daughter is visual uncomfortable during the whole time. After, she quotes a line from Rocky threatening him if he ever tried that again. This is just weird, not only are they bad parents but now they are making their children preform incest. And you thought your parents were bad!

The eldest daughter is completely unhappy in her world. She wants out now. In the night she smashes her dog tooth out with a dumbbell. Smiling with a face covered in blood she walks out to the car and lockes herself in the boot. The movie fades to black after the father finds his daughter missing and heads to out in the morning. We are not told or shown the daughter's faith.

These are horrible parents. If you think your parents are bad then you need to see this film! During the whole movie the parents act completely normal toward the children and make up lies as they go to keep the children from rebelling. Some of the lies told are as followed. After a cat gets into the yard and the son kills it because he has never seen anything such as that in his life, The mother and father tell the children that a cat is a dangerous creature that will kill you. The father comes in the house with ripped up clothes and states that a cat got the eldest brother whom the children have never seen because he does not exist. The parents told the children that they locked the son out after he misbehavior in order to keep them obedient.  The mother states that she is pregnant with a dog and twins. The dog will be born, but if the children are good the twins will not and no one will have to share a room.  Somehow after this move your parents telling you that babies came from a island or huge flying bird just doesn't have the same feeling of being lied to anymore. Does it?

I would recommend this movie to just about anyone that is comfortable with nude scenes and thoughts of incest.  This movie deals with adult content and is not for anyone under 16, maybe 18 depending on your views. So parents do not show this movie to your kids to prove how good you are compared to the ones of this film. LOL. The movie moves at a slow pace but you will be so intrested by the parents lack of sanity toward their children you won't even notice.
